Add sketches, shapes, and editable elements

Use Sketch and Studio elements for diagrams, annotations, and ornaments while keeping the parts of a design easy to edit.

Updated

Choose a sketch or separate elements

Use individual Studio text, shape, image, and artwork layers when the parts need to move or change separately. Use Sketch for a hand-drawn annotation or illustration that you want to treat as one intended object in the design.

For example, a three-step process should keep its labels and arrows separately editable. A small hand-drawn flourish can be one sketch. Avoid putting an entire page's text and decoration into one flattened image if you expect to revise it.

Create a sketch and place it in a design

  1. Start from Create → Sketch or the Sketches area in Studio.
  2. Use the drawing tools, shapes, arrows, and text to make the intended object.
  3. Export it as an image or save it to Assets when you want a reusable file.
  4. Inside a design, use + Doodle to add a sketch as a layer.
  5. Position it around the content it explains and inspect its size at the final output scale.

Use the element library deliberately

Studio's Elements provide reusable visual parts. Search for the object or visual treatment you need, place it, and adjust it in the context of the page. An ornament should support a hierarchy or meaning, such as identifying a callout, rather than making the reader work around unrelated decoration.

  • Keep one independently movable object per layer when you may need to reposition it.
  • Group a label and its shape if they should move together, while retaining their editable parts.
  • Use the Layers panel to select small or overlapping objects.
  • Remove unused hidden layers when a design approaches the 160-layer-per-page limit.

Check bounds, legibility, and reuse

A small ornament should select like a small ornament, not like a full-page image. If an imported drawing has large transparent margins, use an appropriately cropped asset before placing it. Keep enough separation between annotation lines and text that both remain clear on a phone.

Save a reusable drawing to the right brand library with a meaningful name. Before exporting the final design, verify that the sketch is visible, its line weight survives downscaling, and its selection or grouping does not hide an accidental overlap.
